I love this book - if you like the social history of these times (rather than political or military etc) then this is a great book for you. Well written, lots of quotes and referrals from diaries and letters and the author allows those to tell the story, which follows a loose chronological order from baby and childhood in a manor house, through education, coming out and marriage etc. As each aspect is explored, the author will use source material to outline the positive aspects but also the negative. For example, the discussions about girl's education quotes from girls who had very positive relationships with their tutors & governesses, but balances that with material that tells an unfortunately negative experience.I appreciate that in historical examinations. And they use a great deal of source material and refer to it through the chronology, so you hear from the girl as she becomes a wife and then mother (or does not). I've owned this book for less than a year and already read it a second time!! Highly recommended!
