This book is a waste of time. It codifies a few common sense ideas about interpersonal communication, mixing in a couple mostly-solid psychological concepts about perspective framing, then smothers it all in some self-help positive thinking gravy that is at times simplistic and condescending, and at other times absurd bridging on insane. The last thing the world needs is a book somewhere between Deepak Chopra, Scientology, and Tony Robbins. The author LITERALLY thinks that if you think positively, good things will begin coming your way, as in somehow your 'positive energy' is an actual quantifiable force that reaches out into the universe, interacts with it, and almost magnetically attracts other positive energy things. So much so, that if you think positively, people will appear to provide you just what you need, right when you need it... like, literally. He references 'scientific' studies from this group called the Heartmath institute, which purports to have evidence of the human heart actually being another, separate intellect which the brain needs to be attuned-to through positive energy practices. Furthermore, that the heart has an energy field which extends out and interacts with the earth's magnetic fields so much so that if we all properly attuned our heartminds and our brains, we'd suffuse the planet with 'positive' energy. 0_oOk, so lets talk about the narrative. This book is directed, rather specifically, at white, male, middle class, middle aged middle managers. How do I know this? Because all of the success stories in the book, with the exception of a female school teacher and Joy, the female bus driver, are white middle-aged men in some semblance of middle management positions, except those who have embraced this philosophy for the longest, they, of course, are either owners or executives. Now, how do I know the ethnicity of these characters you might ask, as this book didn't reference race at all but for the carefully chosen Jose? Well, I had the privilege to listen to the audiobook read by the author. He seemed pretty intentional about giving each character a specific voice. For instance, Joy, that bus driver we talked about, sounded like his fantasy version of Queen Latifa. OF COURSE the bus driver is a sage black woman with nothing but benevolence who absolutely adores her job as a bus driver, cuz she gets to help all those downtrodden middle class white-folk! How inspiring and inclusive.My guess as to why this was chosen as a book for us is that Gordon references god a few times, and he would ask us to be almost blindly enthusiastic about everything we value. There is no effective strategy for conflict resolution in this book, he simply says ignore, isolate, or remove those with negative 'energy'. And Gordon's philosophy has a dangerously naive take on the power of positive without recognizing why negative feelings/interactions occur, or how to address them. And, one of the most insulting things is this obtuse notion that EVERY negative event has a positive side for everyone. Though I firmly believe in the idea of seeking the positive things in your life when you're struggling and re-framing when it is beneficial, this does little to help real people with real problems actually find strategies to deal with those problems effectively.
